Sport Norway halted grassroots sports streaming – self-criticism

This was conveyed by the related association in a joint press release.

– Sport wants to fully ensure that non-professional sports streaming in age-specific classes takes place within a safe framework. We will now conduct a thorough investigation into the unanswered questions and conditions of risk, including what has been raised in the media recently, said the secretary general of the Norwegian Handball Association Erik Langerud.

The decision has been taken after talks between the associations involved and partners on Friday.

The Norwegian Handball Association, the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association, the Norwegian Bandy Association, the Norwegian Volleyball Association, the Norwegian Basketball Association and the Norwegian Football Association are participating in the project.

Take self-criticism

The press release states that to date there have been “different suppliers, little coordination and uncertainty around the handling of privacy”.

For indoor ice hockey, handball and bandy, streaming of age-only matches is discontinued until further notice. Soccer, basketball, and volleyball are not yet launched and ready for streaming. Here, there will be talk of waiting for start-up.

In the future, it is planned that sport will carry out an investigation before a new assessment is made in the case. The Norwegian Sports Association will be linked here.

– Together, we take seriously the concerns that have been raised by some municipalities and other players in the sport. It’s important to do a thorough job involving the youth themselves, said general secretary Espen Andre Johansen of the Basketball Association of Norway and Karl-Petter Løken of the Football Association of Norway in a joint statement.

Unfortunate episode

The sports stop refers to the ethics forum of the Norwegian Sports Confederation, to which several special confederations are a part, already in the process of making “children’s best judgement”.

Media partners TV 2 and Amedia support the decision to take a break.

Sports president Berit Kjøll also hailed the decision.

– I am pleased with the initiative that the special associations involved have now notified us of, and I think it is a wise decision that has been made to suspend streaming activity in age-specific classes until all relevant issues have been thoroughly investigated and clarified, he told NTB .

– The Sports Council is now looking forward to being presented with a comprehensive basis for the case and a thorough treatment of the case, including input from the sport itself, the best judgment of the children and the participation process of the athletes, said Kjøll further.

CEO Lars Setsaa of MyGame also called the decision to take a break a wise one.

“We certainly have to listen to the needs of sport and work constructively to find good solutions that create security for the future,” he wrote to NTB.

He further acknowledged that the last few weeks have shown that not everyone is convinced that the current solutions adequately protect the security and information needs of young players.

Automatic camera

The MyGame project is about automatic cameras being installed in sports halls across the country to live stream matches from the age group of 15 and above. The idea is that family and friends should be able to take part in matches online in exchange for paying for a MyGame subscription.

At the same time, VG unveiled several unfavorable episodes around which the streaming section has started. This drew strong criticism from various parties. The children’s ombudsman recently criticized the project in an interview with NTB.

– Norwegian ice hockey has a lot of good experience with grassroots sports streaming. It is also important to include in the debate the positive effects of increased involvement and development of sport through new digital tools for the breadth of Norwegian sport. But we realized that we had to have a better factual basis, so that we can be sure that streaming can be done in a safe environment for the young people themselves, said secretary general Ottar Eide of the Norwegian Ice Hockey Association.
