Sports journalist Tadeusz Olszański has died

Olszański was born on 28 August 1929 in Stanisławów. In the fall of 1943, his family moved to Hungary, and he attended a Polish high school in Balatonboglar. Then the next stage of life begins. In Opole, where his family settled after the war, he passed his secondary school final exams and then, in 1952, the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Warsaw.

For many years he headed the sports department of “Sztandar Młodych”, he was deputy editor-in-chief of “Sportowiec”, deputy editor-in-chief of the sports editorial office of TVP, and also headed the department of National Olympic Publishing.

The actions he initiated in 1963 in “Sztandar Młodych” in connection with the increasing brutality in sports and the nomination of the most polite athlete (boxer Zbigniew Pietrzykowski) gave rise not only in Poland, but also internationally to the idea of promoting the principle of fair play.

Olszański’s report from the games is full of very interesting information describing the careers and dramas of the outstanding Olympic athletes, from Nurmi, Kusociński, Owens and Carl Lewis, whom he describes in “Personal Histories of the Olympic Games”.

Olszański’s next interest was Hungarian literature, he translated more than forty novels and plays, including the novel very popular among young people “Boys from Plac Broni” by Ferenc Molnar.

For four years until 1990, he was director of the Polish Cultural Center in Budapest, and in 1990-1994 he was a correspondent for Polish Radio and Television in Hungary and Yugoslavia.

Then he worked for the weekly “Polityka” until the end of his professional career, working as a sports journalist, and also commenting on matters related to events in Hungary and the Balkan countries.

In the book “Kresy Kresów Stanisławów” Olszański returns to his roots, namely to the third city of Galicia – Stanisławów – after Kraków and Lviv.

In his last book “It happened, it passed, it remains in memory”, published in 2022, he wrote: “I live to write and write. I am a journalist, not only a sports journalist, also a translator of Hungarian literature, radio and television correspondent, but overall, probably the most writer.” .

In 2021, Olszański was recognized by the Plebiscite Chapter as the best press journalist on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the publication of “Przegląd Sportowy”, organized by the Club of Sports Journalists. He collaborates with the editorial offices of “Dookoła Świat”, “Boks”, “Perspektywy”, “Szpilek”, “Zdrowie”, “Gentleman” and “Uroda”.

He received the UNESCO Fair Play award for the book “Czysta Gra” written with Jan Lis.
