In the context of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, emphasis is also placed on its effect on health
and the health system. A special meeting of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe takes place on 10 May. On it 43 of the region’s 53 countries, incl. all EU member states voted in favor of a resolution condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Russia, Belarus and Tajikistan voted against.

The motion for the resolution was filed by Ukraine, EU Member States and a dozen other countries in the region. The Czech Republic participated in the preparation of the text of the resolution.

The resolution addresses, inter alia, the issue of protecting the functioning of the WHO Office on Non-Communicable Diseases and requests the WHO Director-General to prepare a report on the health situation in Ukraine and the associated international health risks. This will be discussed by the World Health Assembly at the end of May.

The gravity of the situation is evidenced by the fact that this is only the second special meeting in the Committee’s more than 70 year history (the first note is to determine the committee chair).
