The Publishers Union supports the adoption of a comprehensive “Global Principles for Artificial Intelligence (AI)”.

Prague, 8 September 2023 (PROTECT) – As many as 26 publishing and journalism organizations from around the world jointly released a document titled “Global Principles for Artificial Intelligence” yesterday.

The aim of this published document is to ensure that the new business opportunities presented by artificial intelligence and innovations in digital transformation emerge accordingly and within the framework of an ethical and responsible approach. The adoption of these Global Principles for Artificial Intelligence should ensure the continued ability for publishers to create and distribute quality content while facilitating the development of trustworthy and responsible AI systems.

The Global Principles for AI reflect many of the important aspects included in the draft EU AI Law, relating to intellectual property, transparency, accountability, quality and integrity, fairness, security, or the design of AI tools and their sustainable development.

Developers, operators and implementers of artificial intelligence systems must basically:

– respect the intellectual property rights that protect media organizations’ investment in the original content they create,

– using an efficient licensing model that can facilitate innovation by training high-quality, trusted AI systems,

– ensuring transparency so that publishers can enforce their rights if their content is included in the training data set,

– clearly cite quotes and sources and associate newly generated AI content with original content from specific authors and publishers,

– recognizing the invaluable role of publishers in creating high-quality content to train artificial intelligence language models and text synthesis,

– comply with competition laws and principles and ensure that artificial intelligence models are not used for purposes contrary to them,

– support trusted and reliable sources of information and ensure that AI-generated content is accurate, true and complete,

– do not distort the original author’s work,

– respect user privacy and transparently disclose which personal data is processed during the design, training and use of AI systems,

– respect human rights and values when operating artificial intelligence systems in full compliance with global laws.
