World War II Museum

Second World War Museum in Gdańsk, opened to the public in March 2017, has been the site of public debate and controversy since its inception, particularly regarding the direction of its mission and the presentation of its history. Established by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in 2008, the museum is intended to promote knowledge about World War II, from a Polish perspective, fosters the memory of victims and heroes from different countries. Its opening was preceded by a long-term conceptual and organizational process involving renowned historians and specialists.

The controversy surrounding the museum increased in 2016, when Minister Piotr Gliński proposed a merger World War II Museum with the Westerplatte Museum and the War of 1939, which received negative reviews and rejection from the academic community and some members of the public. The decision to merge these institutions sparked many legal and social disputes, and finally, after a court decision, the museum opened in a slightly changed form.
