Animals are also affected by heat. They want to build the Arctic at the Prague Zoo for 800 million

On hot days, according to the director of the Prague Zoo, Miroslav Bobek, the exhibition will represent safety not only for polar bears, but also for several other animals.

The Arctic Pavilion for polar bears will be located in the northern part of the zoo.

“The bears can go backwards where it’s colder, we also installed a snowmaker for them here, but unfortunately this pavilion was built in the 1930s and is on the south side where the temperature is high. This prompted us to prepare what is called Arctic project, which means building a large modern space just for polar bears,” explained the director to Novinkám.

The polar bear will have two large cages, each with two saltwater pools. There will also be a parking paddock in the background. Quarters will be structurally separated, which will allow the female to create the absolute oasis of peace necessary for the successful rearing of her cubs, and a bear maternity ward is also planned.

The new pavilion will soon be issued with a building permit, but Bobek is worried that the funds for the pavilion will not be found. The zoo is working on this issue with its founder, the city government of Prague.

“The estimate for the entire exhibition complex is 800 million krona,” said Bobek.

Caregivers handle refrigeration, for example, even in gorillas, which are native to Africa and generally tolerate heat relatively well – on hot days they give them an ice treat in the form of a special ice cream.

“That is a pint cup of frozen vegetables and fruits. We put them in various places in the paddock, they look for them and then eat them. Not only to calm them down, but also as a form of entertainment for them,” primate curator Jan Mengr told Novinkám.
