Dog surfing competition won by western dog

“She loves the waves and it shows. She’s doing really well, I’m so proud,” Connie Horn told NBC 7 San Diego, who according to her daughter Delilah has been surfing for ten years.

If you think that the dog owners here are mostly surfers, you are wrong. “I wouldn’t have done it if I hadn’t done it for him. He likes surfing. He trained on his own, and as time went on I gave him a bigger board so he could last longer in the waves,” Jack Rouss, owner of Gus the Labrador, told The Coast News.

About 70 dogs took part in this year’s competition, which judges judged on many factors. The length of time the dog stays on the board plays a role, but also the “fun factor”, which includes, for example, riding the waves with their owner or other dogs, costumes or tricks performed.

Although all the participants showed great enthusiasm for the sport, the overall victory this year went to a western highland white terrier named Petey.

The popularity of the event, which also raises funds for the Helen Woodward Animal Center through this collection, is evidenced by the large number of people who visit it regularly with their pets.

“We love it here because everyone loves their dogs and really enjoys surfing with them. Helping dogs surf and compete is a big commitment, but everyone here helps each other,” Hornová said describing the atmosphere of competition.
