Archbishop of Grzegorz Ryś becomes a cardinal. Pope Francis made Metropolitan Łódź, Archbishop of Grzegorz Ryś, a cardinal. The consistory in which Francis will present the coat of arms to the new cardinals will take place on 30 September 2023 at the Vatican. Cardinal, officially Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, is the highest ecclesiastical dignity in the Catholic Church after the Pope. All cardinals together form the Council of Cardinals.
Grzegorz Ryś was born on 9 February 1964 in Kraków. It is known Polish Roman Catholic priestdoctor of habilitation humanities specializing in Church history, rector of the Major Seminary of the Archdiocese of Krakow in 2007-2011, auxiliary bishop of Krakow in 2011-2017, metropolitan archbishop of Łódź from 2017, apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Kalisz in 2020-2021, cardinal candidate .
Preachers and retreats, serving in the Archdiocese of Łódź (annual priest’s retreat, Lent retreat for young people “Arena Młodych”, “Retreat for Łódź”), as well as during national cycle events (Lednica, Przystanek Jesus, Strefa Glory Festival retreat in Stary Sącz, meeting Taizé, Chemin Neuf). He prepared for the consideration of the Stations of the Cross during World Youth Day in Krakow in 2016.
In 2018, the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, awarded him the Golden Cross of Merit.
