Kandinsky’s watercolor “composition” sold on Thursday at an auction in Berlin for 310,000. euro, stolen in 1984 from the collection of the National Museum in Warsaw. The work was put up for sale despite the actions taken by Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Polish Embassy in Berlin. – The watercolor was discovered by employees of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as a result of monitoring foreign art markets, the ministry informed earlier Thursday (12/1), which requested the Grisebach auction house to withdraw the watercolor from auction to allow for a thorough inspection and further action in this case. – Regardless of the position of the Ministry of Culture and the actions of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Berlin Grisebach auction house decided to sell a watercolor by Wassily Kandinsky. In the opinion of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, general knowledge of the painting’s history and the possession marks of the National Museum in Warsaw show that the sale of the painting after it has been stolen cannot be considered an act of good faith – said in a statement from the ministry.
