Nick Mason remembers the beginning of Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd was primarily associated with the concept albums The Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall. It is the result of several years of creative development. The group still started with singer Syd Barrett with psychedelic songs with surreal lyrics. After his departure, he began to devote himself to sonic experiments with abundant use of synthesizers, while he was often inspired by science fiction and UFO themes.

It was albums like Umma Gumma or Meddle that produced later masterpieces. But it can’t be ignored that Pink Floyd managed to create impressive songs, not only with Syd Barrett at the head of Arnold Layna’s first singles, See Emily Play and Lucifer Sam, but also later, which was demonstrated by The Nile Song and especially If.

Nick Mason realized that no one was playing the old songs, nor were the other Floyd members returning to the songs, nor were the various tribute bands. He teamed up with Ian Dury’s former Blockheads pub rock guitarist, Lee Harris. They approached bassist Guy Pratt, who accompanied Pink Floyd after Roger Waters’ departure and also played on David Gilmour’s tour, if he would like to play some old psychedelic tunes with them. They were joined by Spandau Ballet guitarist and vocalist Gary Kemp, who alternated with Pratt on mic, and keyboardist Dom Beken.

His debut appearance took place in May 2018 at London club Dingwalls. Initially, the group only wanted to play a few concerts, but the performances received such a great response that they decided to go on tour and continue to do so, and will be performing at the Prague Karlín Forum on Sunday.

They will offer a mix of songs from early albums from debut The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn to the soundtrack recording Obscured By Clouds. Their performance is reminiscent of the days when Pink Floyd was still looking for ways to express and were not afraid to experiment, which is shown by the sonically rich compositions, Echoes, A Saucerful of Secrets, Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun or Atom. mother heart. It is from them that the path to the famous concept board is led.

While some may be annoyed that the singing is different, as John Lewis wrote in a review in this year’s Uncut magazine: “Many of us have seen a number of incarnations of Pink Floyd over the past 40 years, officially formed by Gilmour and Mason, Waters-themed concerts, solo tours Gilmour, or even a tribute band like The Australian Pink Floyd, but it’s definitely a lot more fun than that.”
