Six new Norwegian medals on Thursday

On Thursday morning, we wrote about the great start the Norwegian athletes have had at the Special Olympics – which is the world’s largest sporting event for people with developmental disabilities. During the day, our Special Olympics racked up another six medals: Four in golf, one in judo and one in bowling.

As many as 7,000 athletes from 190 countries will compete in 26 different sports until June 25.

Norway fielded 43 athletes in 10 different sports: badminton, bowling, athletics, golf, handball, judo, horseback riding, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming and gymnastics.

By the time Wednesday was over, the Norwegian athletes had captured an incredible eight medals. And on Thursday there are six more Norwegian Special Olympics medals.

Julie Pauline Wikdahl of Trondheim crushed the competition and won Norway’s first judo gold at the Special Olympics.

In the first game, he threw ippon (10 points) in seven seconds. A good effort in the second game also earned him a gold medal around his neck.

– I value this gold above all, said Wikdahl in a press release from the Norwegian Sports Confederation.

Coach Ståle Wikdahl was also impressed.

– As usual, he’s very calm. I wish the coach was that calm. But 12-14 years in the game gives you routine, says Ståle Wikdahl.

Our bowlers have been on the podium in unified team sports, where they won a bronze medal earlier in the week. And on Thursday they did it again – and this time it didn’t get any worse: Drammen Tigers’ Stian Lindtveit and Rune Risvik took the bowlers second bronze in three days at the Special Olympics – this time in the Unified Doubles.

– I am very satisfied with today’s game and I took a lot of hits, said Lindtveit.

– I didn’t do it right, but I’m happy with the medal, added Risvik.
