“Turn off your cell phone and stop.” A Finnish island is urging visitors to put their phones away while on vacation

Ulko-Tammio Island is located in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, in one of Finland’s national parks, which has been named the happiest country in the world six times in a row. Ironically, it is also home to the Nokia brand behind the world’s best-selling smartphones of all time.

“Ulko-Tammio Island, which is located off the coast of Hamina, will be a phone-free island this summer,” the island’s tourism agency Visit Kotka-Hamina said in a press release. “We want to encourage tourists to turn off their phones, stop and enjoy our island,” the message continued.

Ulko-Tammio is one of more than forty national parks of Finland, uninhabited, but at the same time home to many rare species of birds and plants. Visitors can catch a glimpse of it on a walk along the educational trails or from the island’s watchtower.

Participation in the digital detox is voluntary for tourists on the island. Since the island has great cell signal, the temptation to reach for your cell phone will be everywhere. However, staff at Parks & Wildlife Finland, which manages the island, expect visitors to actually disconnect from their phones.

“Turning off your phone, getting to know nature and meeting people in person will definitely improve your mood and well-being,” said Sari Castrénová, a psychologist from the Finnish Institute of Health and Social Care, in a press release. As he added, a short break from the phone would bring more time for new experiences.
