Solar eclipse: Experts debunk conspiracy theorists' bizarre claims | Science and technology news

On Monday, an estimated 31.6 million people across America will experience the largest solar eclipse since 2017.

Researchers will be able to study the effects on the layer atmospherebut according to conspiracy theorists, this could be the end of times.

The internet is going wild with some outlandish claims.

A signature from God

Republican Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene said she believes this is a sign from God that America needs to repent of its sins.

His post on X suggests that the recent earthquake in New York combined with the eclipse are “strong signs.”

“I ask our country to listen,” he wrote.

A community note added to his post, viewed by more than eight million people, explained that earthquakes were common and that a solar eclipse was expected at the right time.

But the ability to predict eclipses also plays a role in other conspiracy theories.

Beautiful plan

Right-wing commentator Alex Jones recently hosted an X Spaces event to discuss “what globalists are planning for the upcoming total solar eclipse.”

Host Andrew Meyer told viewers that the eclipse occurs on a date in the Jewish calendar where new energy can be channeled into the coming year. Mr Jones described Mr Meyer as “an expert in his field”.

“The globalists clearly want to give a big push against evil, against negative energy,” Meyer said.

“They want to inject negative energy into the seeds of the new year because that is what they reap.”

A guest host on Infowars Alex Jones also discussed the idea that scientists studying eclipses are using it for their “evil plans.”

Explanation of a total solar eclipse

“Globalists believe that these events have special power,” says Mike Adams.

“So they prepared important things in mind, things to awaken power.

“They used the solar eclipse as justification for the evil plans they wanted to carry out.”

End of day

Then there was a piece on the Internet that said Monday would be the end of the world, starting in Carbondale, Illinois.

The influencers incorrectly mapped the eclipse's “path of totality” and indicated that it covered between six and eight locations called Nineveh.

Nineveh is mentioned in the Bible, so theorists attribute religious significance to their incorrect mapping.

In fact, the path showing where the total eclipse will be visible covers two areas of Nineveh. Others will see a partial eclipse.

When combined with the path of the 2017 US eclipse, it forms a cross. At the center of the cross is Carbondale, Illinois.

If you live in Carbondale, then you're lucky enough to see the total eclipse twice in seven years. According to rejected TikTok influencers, this also means the end of the world has begun in your city.

These theories have been disputed by other influencers such as Dan McClellan, a religion academic at the University of Birmingham.

“The eclipse on April 8 means nothing other than the Moon being between the Earth and the Sun,” he said.

There are also rumors that America will be in darkness for several days, when in reality some areas may experience darkness for a few minutes.

There are theories that food will run out, phone reception will disappear, and power will go out.

In fact, this eclipse will be very significant and exciting, but if you survived the 2017 eclipse, chances are you will survive this eclipse.
