The winter cold spreads throughout Norway. Here are some tips on how to stay warm

MO I RANA (VG) Brrrr! Here’s some chilling advice from northerners who are frequently hit by bad weather.

Published:

It hasn’t been a few days since there was record cold in Mo i Rana. On Monday, the temperature dropped to minus 27 degrees.

Nordic people know how to dress and really appreciate cold weather. This may be worse for communities in the south, which are in the midst of a (rather unusual) cold wave. In fact, cold temperatures in Norway have not been this cold in November since 2010.

From Ranfjorden in Mo i Rana comes this clear advice from ice swimmer Bente Fagerthun:

– You just need to get dressed and go out. Sometimes it’s nice to stand outside in the rain and blizzard, and then you feel alive.

– Do you have any advice for those who are also not used to the cold?

– Maybe to be better prepared. Winter and snow come every year. If you don’t change your winter tires or dress up, it will be bad, he says.

Ride the fjords all year round

There is no type of weather and wind, or temperature, that stops Hoppiranfjorden Badeklubb.

Instead, they want more of them to get out into the cold Ranfjord.

– Sometimes we have to break through the ice to get out. This provides an extra boost, says Bente Fagerthun.

It was Fagerthun who started the swimming club. This is the fourth winter in which he regularly plunges into the sea.

– For some, this may seem a bit extreme?

– I understand that way of thinking, and I often think when we were on the way here we went crazy, said Fagerthun.

– It’s like a happiness pill

Once they entered the water, the calm subsided. For several minutes they floated in the fjord.

– I find peace in the water and it is a very pleasant natural experience. There will be lots of laughs with this gang too. It’s very social, Fagerthun said.

KNOWN: Hoppiranfjorden Badeklubb is active on social media.

The effects of the bath last a long time and they become addicted to the sensation of the ice bath.

– It’s like a happiness pill, says Vivi-Ann Tangen.

And it provides a real feeling of mastery.

– You have mastered something that many others did not dare to think about at once, says Bente Fagerthun.

How to stay warm

When the ice swimmers returned to land, they immediately put on dry, warm clothing.

Outdoor expert Merethe Eliassen Hansen (27) has great tips on the best way to stay warm.

– Pack socks, get dressed readreadThis is a dialect word for wool socks. Preferably wool socks that are slightly thicker. and don’t complain too much, says Eliassen Hansen.

– Wear wool, from head to toe! It was the only thing that worked, he said.

It’s important to cover areas of the body that lose the most heat, such as the head, neck, wrists, and ankles.

Tour Companion: Dog Gnist hopes to continue his tour.

– For women, it is important to keep the buttocks and thighs warm. We usually freeze there more often than men, says Eliassen Hansen.

He suggested a skirt down. But if you don’t have one, you can tie a light jacket around your waist.

– Or you can wear a long, thick wool jumper, says Eliassen Hansen while showing off his home-knitted jumper.

She suggests wearing several layers — and remember that they shouldn’t be too tight. The air between the layers of wool is very important.

And in the end, it’s wise to have something that can stop the cold wind.

Walk along Norway

Merethe Eliassen Hansen has a wealth of travel experience. Today, he’s doing what he’s dreamed of for the past decade: Walking the length of Norway.

– I started in Lindesnes on June 10th. Then I slowly but surely moved north, said Eliassen Hansen.

Now he is resting at his home in Rana, before continuing his journey north.

– The aim is to take the northern route and arrive at Nordkapp in June next year, he said.
