– Swimming is not recommended in Hovedøya, Gressholmen, Lindøya, Bleikøya, Bekkelagsbadet, Sørenga, Bispekilen and Operastranda, writes Oslo council.

NRK wrote that 130 million liters of waste had washed into the Oslofjord – the equivalent of 16,250 truckloads. The leak may have occurred since Sunday, but it was only discovered on Friday.

– It’s quite fierce. We have never experienced this in the Water and Sewerage Agency, emergency manager Frode Hult at the Water and Sewerage Service in Oslo told NRK.

The city government stated that the wall between the main tunnel and the spillway was damaged by last weekend’s storms, and large amounts of contaminated wastewater had washed into the Oslofjord.

Signs have been posted advising against swimming in relevant places. The Water and Sewerage Agency has repaired the damage, but some is still being dumped into rivers and fjords.

– The recommendation not to bathe has been given in consultation with the health authorities in the city of Oslo and is valid until further notice is given, at the earliest on Wednesday 6 September, the municipality wrote.

Divers and freedivers should exercise caution or choose not to dive the Indre Oslofjord in the coming week.

Untreated wastewater may contain organic matter, hair, faeces and vomit, in addition to environmental toxins, viruses and bacteria such as E.coli.
