Protests against the burning of the Koran continue. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a strong statement against Sweden on Saturday in a series of messages on Twitter.

– The Swedish government should realize that, by supporting criminals who burn Korans, the Swedish government is preparing to fight against the Muslim world, Khamenei wrote.

Furthermore, he also wrote that those who insult the Koran deserve “the most severe punishment” and it is the duty of the Swedish government to hand over those who have burned the Koran to the judicial authorities in Muslim countries.

Earlier on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Iran summoned the Danish ambassador on the carpet.

It was a reaction to a man burning Korans in a field near the Iraqi embassy in Copenhagen on Friday.

Khamenei’s reaction came a day after massive demonstrations in neighboring Iraq’s capital Baghdad.

On Friday, thousands of people took to the streets in the sweltering heat to burn Swedish and rainbow flags.

The reason for the protests was that Sweden decided to allow demonstrations outside the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm on Friday. A Koran trampled there.

The day before, the Swedish embassy in Baghdad was stormed and torched by angry protesters.

Several Muslim countries have criticized Sweden and summoned Swedish diplomats.

Hold a crisis meeting

Swedish newspaper Express wrote that the Swedish government’s strategic coordination group held a crisis meeting on Friday morning in regards to the burning of the Koran.

– We are always ready to deal with complicated events and situations, wrote the government’s press department in a press release.

Representatives from the government would not comment further on what was discussed at the meeting, the paper said.
