Male domain only? IT Summer School for High School Students takes place at CTU

“As part of the summer school program, the girls got to know many fields of informatics and saw for themselves that IT is not just boring sitting at the computer,” said a CTU representative.

During the weekly program, they will learn the basics of programming (so-called IoT, CSS, JavaScript, HTML), robotics, and vector graphics. After four days of intensive training, participants will undergo the final full day of the hackathon, during which they will work on their own projects.

The entire event, which was held between 12 and 16 July, during the holiday period, will end with a gala dinner at the CTU Rectorate, where the participants will present their work and knowledge to the expert committee.

Women often don’t trust each other unnecessarily

“It’s no longer just a male domain. However, many women in this field do not trust each other. That’s why we want girls to know that IT isn’t just about programming, and our summer school is supposed to show them that IT is a field that can offer them interesting jobs. The girls should not be afraid to apply for IT at all, even if, for example, their environment prevents them from doing so,” says Tereza Nedjalková of the non-profit educational organization Czechitas.

This was also confirmed by one of the participants, Eliška who is already studying at the Faculty of Information Technology, CTU. “My mother tried to persuade me to study medicine, and she almost succeeded, but in the end I discovered that I wasn’t going to enjoy biology as much as computer science,” he says.

Working in the laboratory

The girls will also try to work in the faculty’s laboratory, where they will meet, for example, humanoid robots.

“We are delighted that this summer school for girls is being held at our faculty. Thanks to this event, many girls will know that their future lies in IT, and they will apply to us. On average, 15 percent of girls currently study at FIT CTU. I am happy that this event was organized, because thanks to them, girls are not afraid of technical education and more and more of them are choosing informatics as their field of study. The faculty also offers education to complete beginners, who will become IT experts after graduation, “said Josef Kolář, Deputy Dean of External Relations.

IT Summer School is designed as a weekly camp with a fixed program from 08:30 to 18:00. The main program takes place in the FIT computer classroom, the evening program is mostly for visits to partner companies.
