An editorial in Aftenposten on April 15 argued that waste from the reactors at Kjeller and Halden was an argument against nuclear power in Norway. The editor is wrong.

In contrast, a new nuclear power plant in Norway will finance and build a waste dump where the existing waste can also be sent. The state will save billions on it.

In Sweden and Finland, landfills are built in cities that have nuclear power plants. A full 84 percent of the population of the Swedish host city support size. The Municipality of Halden has opened host a landfill for existing waste. With more nuclear power cities, there will be more possible places to dispose of waste.

He scientific consensus that waste is handled safely. However, a better solution could be created, for example in recycle or waste disposal by means technology from oil and gas. It will be easier to develop such a solution if we are careful Norway’s nuclear competence.

By collaborating with Norsk Kjernekraft, the state will save money and increase Norway’s existing waste management capabilities.
