Støre will work for more renewable energy in developing countries

– 3.6 billion people live in energy poverty. They receive too little of the world’s energy funding, even though they represent half of the world’s population, Støre told NTB.

He has agreed to join the “Global Energy Alliance for People and the Planet” and will lead the global council within the alliance. It became known during the UN General Assembly in New York.

The goal of this alliance is for more people in poor countries to have access to electricity, and this should be done through the development of renewable energy instead of fossil energy.

– This is a collaboration between private and public capital, with investments in developing countries to start renewable concrete projects, said the Prime Minister.

His role will primarily be leading global leadership forums within the alliance, with leaders from the financial and political sectors.

– We must do more to increase the rate of investment in renewable energy in developing countries. Access to energy is necessary for health, education and business to create jobs and growth. This is also very important for achieving climate goals, says Støre.

The alliance aims to create 150 million new jobs, avoid 4 gigatonnes of future CO2 emissions and strengthen access to energy for one billion people, says the Prime Minister’s office.
