The government continues plans for Mjøssykehuset – to become a European leader – Dagsavisen

In addition to the new Mjøssykehus in Moelv, there will be a multi-purpose local hospital in Lillehammer, a further development of the hospital in Tynset and a hospital in Elverum with more activity than following the council’s decisions in South East Health, according to the government.

– The new Mjøssykehuset also involves good and important services in Lillehammer, Elverum and Tynset. We believe this solution will ensure good hospital services for rural residents. It’s important for patients and important for professionals, said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre at a news conference on Monday morning.

The Prime Minister also said that Mjøssykehuset would become the leading hospital in Europe.

– We will have the world’s best hospital in Norway. When the new hospital is built, it will become the leading hospital in Europe. Because that was the situation when Norway built hospitals, said Støre.

Want maternity services in Elverum

Minister of Finance Trygve Slagsvold Vedum (Sp) believes the government’s decision ensures people across the hinterlands safe and good emergency care and good special care in the future.

– I believe we have found a solution where we show that the government is listening, and at the same time ensures a good offer for the population, he said.

Among other things, the government has decided that the hospital in Elverum will have rehabilitation services and an internal medicine emergency function, and they also want arrangements for maternity services with a maternity ward in the Elverum hospital.

A point of contention for years

The ministers said during a news conference that they were happy to end the 20-year hospital debate in the outback. The location of the new Mjøssykehuset in Innlandet has been a topic of debate for years.

The new hospital structure meant that the two largest cities in the region, Hamar and Gjøvik, would lose their hospitals.

This was also the result when the then Health Minister Bent Høie (H) and the Solberg government agreed in 2021 to build a new main hospital in Innlandet in Moelv.
