Veronica Anderson: – Killed after a mysterious phone call

On the night of Sunday August 25, 1991, mother-of-two Veronica Anderson, 42, was found brutally dead in Penketh near Warrington in northwest England.

The killing of the animal sparked a national police chase, and the case also features prominently in the BBC’s crime programme, Crimewatch.

For more than 31 years, the murder has been a mystery to police, but now the case may be on its way to a solution.

Mysterious phone call

Around 10 pm on Saturday night, August 24, 1991, Anderson received a phone call. According to the local newspaper Warrington Guard he ran out the door shortly after the call.

The 42-year-old man did not carry the bag. He also didn’t turn off the TV until he left the house.

All indications were that he would be on a short visit.

Anderson placed his seven-year-old son, Niel, with his neighbour, and said he would be back to pick him up in ten minutes.

Five hours later, his body was found. Anderson hung over the wheel of his own Ford Cortina.

Brutal murder

The 42-year-old man had his throat slit and was strangled. Next to the lifeless body, police found bloody gloves and a long rope.

The autopsy showed no signs of sexual abuse. Police were also able to determine that he was not the victim of a robbery.

Police estimate that Anderson was killed between 11:30 and 2:30 pm.

A witness who spoke to police claimed to have seen a woman who matched Veronica’s description in a pub around 10:30 p.m. – that is, half an hour after she left the house.

The woman described by the witness must have been accompanied by an unidentified man, thought to be in her late 30s or early 40s.

Witnesses described him with short city gray hair – wearing a light brown jacket.

Since then, no one has seen Veronica Anderson alive. It is also unknown who called the 42-year-old woman just hours before she was found dead.

New tips

On August 25, 2021, exactly 30 years after the murder, the police came out again with a tip from the public.

“Everyone in even the smallest detail about the woman found with her neck cut off in a car 30 years ago, must stand to end the family,” police in Cheshire said last summer, according to the British. BBC News.
