Winter 2023: When will spring end?

When does winter time end in spring

Winter time will change to daylight saving time in the spring of 2023 on Sunday, March 26, when daylight saving time begins.

When does winter time start in 2023

Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, October 29, 2023. We move our hands from 3:00 to 2:00.

People have to move walls or watches by themselvesthe time on electronic devices, for example on mobile phones or computers, is set automatically. Anyone traveling by public transit over long distances during the time change will be an hour longer on the journey. In the middle of the night, night trains and buses wait an hour at several stations and depart according to Central European time.

Why standard winter time?

People often mistakenly think of winter time as the opposite of summer time. But in fact, the last Sunday in October switches to standard time (Central European Time – CET), also astronomical.

The reason for daylight saving time (Central European Summer Time – SELČ) was originally to save electricity. The first introduction of SELČ occurred in 1916 during the First World War. The government wants to turn on the street lights later in the summer. The nights are shorter in summer and people are more active at night than in the morning. So it was necessary to “move the night” to a time when the sun was still shining. But today, according to critics, the energy savings are minimal.

Among the first to switch to SELČ were Germany and Austria-Hungary, that is, also the Czech nation. A number of other countries also joined gradually. Currently, the time regularly changes to summer time in most European and North American countries.

Winter time only once

True winter time was introduced only once in our history. It took place on December 1, 1946 and ended on February 23, 1947. Like summer, winter time that’s one hour from standard time, but time is moving in the opposite direction. The difference between summer and winter time is two hours.

In 1946, the time did not change from summer to winter in one day. First, classically, on the last Sunday of October, the time changes from summer to standard time, then in December it switches to winter time.

The argument for the existence of winter time is energy. The power plant is unable to produce enough electricity during morning (7-8am) and evening (4-8pm) peaks. So it is necessary to “move the day” so that there is noon at this time. The night lasts approximately eight hours in the winter months.

The relevant law, which also covers winter time, has never been repealed and in the Czech Republic and Slovakia it still exists today. However, it is not defined, so in our country only CEC and SELČ alternate.
