(Elbil24): Driving a car with a trailer is not easy. With a regular driver’s license, which is class B, there are a number of restrictions on what you can squat in the trailer hitch.

Recently, Elbil24 had a case on this, where we saw that only one of the electric cars sold as brand new could legally be driven with a class B driver’s license and the maximum trailer weight allowed for the connected car:

5 percent

The Norwegian Road Administration regularly inspects vehicles on the road, and from January to September they can report that 5,000 light vehicles with trailers have been inspected. Of these, 260 drivers do not have the SIMs required for the combination. If we assume roughly the same monthly figures for October as the average for the first nine months, we reach nearly 300 cases.

If you stop at a checkpoint with a trailer and don’t have sufficient rights on your driver’s license, you should leave the trailer, or perhaps ask someone with a valid driver’s license to come and drive. The Swedish Road Administration also submitted a report to the police.

Many don’t know the rules

We approached the press officer at the Norwegian Public Road Administration:

– Do you have the impression that this is something people are very aware of when they are stopped?

– The two of you and. Some are unfamiliar with the rules and others take a chance. Often the requirements, which are the combined total permissible weight of the car and trailer, are mixed with the current weight of the car and trailer. We advise the driver to check with trailer calculator to the National Road Administration. There you enter the license plate on the vehicle and get an answer on which driver’s license is required (B, BE, B96) to be able to legally drive a combination of vehicles, wrote press officer Bjørn Lillevolden in an email to Elbil24.

With the Statens Vegvesen trailer calculator, you can check if the car/trailer combination can be legally driven with your driver's license class. Here we see that the 1000 kg trailer cannot be towed with a VW ID.4 if you have a class B driving license.

That’s the maximum allowed the total weight applicable to the SIM. Basically, a car + trailer must weigh less than 3,500 kg to be legally driven with a class B driving license, unless the total weight allowed for the trailer is 750 kg or less.

If the trailer has a total permissible weight of more than 750 kg, it is difficult to get under the 3,500 kg limit with an electric car, as the total permissible weight for the car alone often exceeds 2,500 kg.

SIM class B96 gives you permission to drive a car + trailer with a total permissible weight of up to 4,250 kg together, and with BE you can drive up to 7,000 kg in total for cars and trailers.

Will have a higher weight limit

In a world where cars are becoming much heavier, the EU is now starting to work on revising driving license directives.

Several interest organizations and other actors have noted requests that the weight limit should be increased.

Among them is automaker Bentley, whose new car is approaching the 3,500kg mark dangerously.

– With today’s technology, the total weight will reach “ceilings” across Europe, product director Chris Cole told Australia Car sell.

If you are driving with an adapter in the towbar socket, there are a few things you should pay attention to.

Earlier this year also took Norwegian car and caravan club Supports increasing body weight limit. Since you can drive a 3,500 kg car + 750 kg trailer with class B, the association believes that the weight limit should be increased from 3,500 to 4,250 kg.

– Responses from automakers suggest that most people with “regular” driver’s licenses are immediately at risk of being banned from driving a car or caravan, said Berit Seljeseth Osa, president of the Norsk Bobil and Caravan Club.

The driver’s license (SIM) revision process will continue in 2023.
