The Special Olympics squad was honored by the Crown Prince Couple

Yesterday, the Norwegian team from the Special Olympics in Berlin was invited to a reception at the Ministry of Culture and Equality to highlight Norway’s efforts in the championships. The reception was held at the residence of the government representative.

The Special Olympics are the world’s largest sporting event for people with developmental disabilities. 7,000 athletes from 190 countries competed in Berlin from June 17 to 25. The Norwegian delegation consisted of 43 athletes competing in ten different sports. Norwegians participate in badminton, bowling, athletics, golf, handball, judo, equestrian, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming and gymnastics.

The evening began with a speech by Minister of Culture and Equality Lubna Jaffery, before sports president Zaineb Al-Samarai offered kind words for the team.

Norway’s squad for the Special Olympics is the largest squad Norway has ever sent to the Games. In total, there were 51 medals won by Norwegian athletes.

The athletes then spoke with Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit in small groups. The Crown Prince couple spent a lot of time talking to the athletes and hearing about how the championships went.

Madcon also traveled to speak with the athletes, which they also did before the opening ceremony in Berlin. The Norwegian duo created the official song for the championships, and they also performed at the opening ceremony.

The evening ended with a musical performance by Carl-Henrik Nilsen.
